How to Start Stretching Your Septum

How to Start Stretching Your Septum

Looking to take your septum ring to the next level? In this guide, we'll explore how to begin stretching your septum and ensure a positive stretching experience!

Septum stretching has grown in popularity in the past few years. It is a modification that allows individuals to expand the size of their septum for a personalized and alternative look. This piercing is a moderately easy one to stretch, however, there are crucial differences between stretching a septum versus lobes.

Understanding Septum Stretching

Septum stretching involves gradually increasing the size of the hole in your septum by inserting larger jewelry over time. This process allows you to achieve your desired gauge size, ranging from small increments to more significant expansions, depending on your preferences.

Septum stretching offers the opportunity to take advantage of styles that aren't typically available to 16 gauge piercings. Plus, a chunkier piece of jewelry always looks better (in our opinion).

Getting Started

Before embarking on your septum stretching journey, it's essential to have a fully healed septum piercing. Attempting to stretch a fresh or irritated piercing can lead to complications such as tearing, bleeding, or infection. It is also essential that your septum is pierced correctly -- meaning that it is located in the "sweet spot," and not too high or low.

Once your piercing has healed, you can begin the stretching process by following these steps:

1. Choose the Right Jewelry:

Quality jewelry is crucial for healthy stretched piercings! We recommend jewelry that is made of stainless steel, titanium or glass -- avoid using porous materials like wood or stone in freshly stretched piercings! They can harbor bacteria and cause infections. Once your stretched piercing is healed (typically 2-3 months after going up a size) you can begin to wear porous materials.

Pinchers are a great option for stretching! Single flare plugs, horseshoe barbells, and hinged segments can also work, but avoid using double flare jewelry!

2. Size Up Gradually:

Like ears, we recommend sizing up 1mm or one gauge at a time. Some stretches may require a half gauge size. Allow your piercing to fully heal between stretched to avoid damaging your tissue.

3. LUBE!!

Apply a generous amount of lubricant on your jewelry and in your nose before sizing up. We recommend our Holey Butt'r cream for stretching your septum or lobes!

4. Listen to Your Body:

Unlike when stretching lobes, your septum may be a bit more uncomfortable and sore after stretching. This tenderness can persist for several days. Listen to your body and if putting in larger jewelry is painful, take it as a sign that your body is not quite ready to stretch.

Septum stretching is a super rewarding modification that allows you to personalize your piercing. By being patient and following proper techniques, you can achieve a super cute stretched septum! Good luck!
